GrantGopher.com - Grant Funding Search

May 27, 2008 Author: KillerStartups.com - all | Filed under: KillerStartups

What it does

Grant Gopher is a site that sends registered users weekly email announcements about available grants. Users can find out about federal, state, private, and local grant donations to open up funding possibilities for their causes. Possible grant receivers can be individuals, small businesses, and larger organizations. To find a grant that suits their cause, users may search the list of available grants, and refine their search with criteria that is relevant to their needs and qualities. This is free site to use, and also offers links on other free resources that users will find valuable, such as a grant glossary and a list of various grant forms.

In their own words

“Maybe we're crazy..... OK, we know we're crazy. Searching out and cataloging available grant announcements takes a lot of time! But we believe that this information should be freely available, especially because grants are so desperately needed by people and organizations that may not be able to afford subscription fees or a professional grant researcher. So here's what we've done: Set up a database that only includes grants currently open for application. No outdated information here! We include everything that we can find....corporate foundations, community foundations, private foundations and all levels of government, designed a really simple interface that you can filter by program area and state, also includes keyword search, given you full access to every grant record in our database, included all the necessary information to review and apply for the grant, kept everything online - you just sign in to search. There is no special software to download, and no upgrades to pay for. It really, honestly, is free.”

Why it might be a killer

Grant Gopher is a very consolidated and detailed list of grants available for all ranges of organizations and causes. The website itself is simple to use and full of information. This is a one-stop shop for anyone curious about finding the resources to applying for grants.

Some questions

What other resources and explanations be useful to users? What partnerships can be formed with existing organizations to link applicants to this site to obtain information and applications? Could model example applications be of use to users?

Neighborcity.com - Unaffiliated Real Estate Portal

May 27, 2008 Author: KillerStartups.com - all | Filed under: KillerStartups

What it does

Unlike many competing web-based real estate portals that often solicit fees from real estate companies for ad placements, NeighborCity is an independent portal that allows users to search for properties and receive impartial results. Also, instead of only listing certain properties or providing an incomplete view of the market, NeighbourCity integrates directly with local MLS listings guaranteeing search results that include every property listed with a broker or real estate agent in your desired area. Using the site is simple: Search for the ideal property and view homes on a map complete with photos, next, NeighborCity will hook you up with a realtor that meets your specific need and finally, NeighborCity and your realtor will guide you through the rest of the sales process.

In their own words

“NeighborCity is an unbiased real estate search engine built with real estate buyers and sellers in mind. Our goal is to help you find the perfect home for your next move, locate your ideal second home or to help you compare your home to others in your neighborhood when considering whether to sell your home and how to price it for sale.”

Why it might be a killer

By providing unbiased listings and including all listed properties in any given area, this will become a popular site for those looking to find honest property listings. People are fed up with search engines that don’t provide them with the results they want but instead provide them with sponsored information.

Some questions

This seems like a well-thought out idea and it is a site that should eventually become profitable. Do they have the financial backing necessary to last during these particularly dreary times for the real estate market in general?

ChilliFreeze.com - A Marketplace for Freelance Writers

May 27, 2008 Author: KillerStartups.com - all | Filed under: KillerStartups

What it does

Write Match is an India-based startup launched under the Chillifreeze Indian Writers Association. Put simply, Write Match is a new marketplace for freelance writers. Sure, freelance sites are plentiful around the nets and you certainly won’t find it hard to find something on one of these sites, but it’s often more work than what it’s worth. Most freelance marketplaces make you bid for the job and if you don’t have the right price, somebody else will get the job. With Write Match, clients worldwide can post projects and hire writers simply and quickly through the Write Match forums. All projects are listed in the forums. Writers simply register and apply. Chillifreeze takes a commission on each project posted and completed, and Chillifreezer acts as the intermediary between clients and writers.

In their own words

“Write Match is an online marketplace at www.chillifreeze.com, an exclusive portal for freelance writers.”

Why it might be a killer

Write Match provides an interesting service for Indian freelance writers. It lets writers apply rather than bid for projects while the client pays a fee for posting a project. This way writers can focus on the work rather than getting the job.

Some questions

Will Write Match’s model work? Why not allow more communication between client and write? Will the transparency of the applications and project posting be a deterrent to some?

Workmole.com - Post Odd Jobs and Services Free

May 27, 2008 Author: KillerStartups.com - all | Filed under: KillerStartups

What it does

WorkMole is an online community designed to connect anyone offering services with people who seek them. From babysitting or carpentry to lawn mowing or computer repair, Workmole is the place to go when you are in need of a service. Workmole utilizes user reviews to help the best service providers rise to the top and also has a “Moledex” which allows users to store the contact information of service providers they are happy with. The Moledex can also be used as a tool to reference, review or recommend favorite service providers to others in the future. Lastly, Workmole allows service providers to upload a photo of themselves and fill out a profile in an attempt to make the environment safer and more familiar.

In their own words

“Find the right local person for any job, or create a posting of your own. Advertise yourself or small business for free! Babysitters, dog-walkers, lawn-care, computer repair, anything! We give you the tools to track your customers, schedule and complete jobs”

Why it might be a killer

This is a nicely designed site that could become a popular portal for local classified ads. It possesses a nice balance of typical ad network with enough 2.0 tools to make it an attractive current and future project.

Some questions

The calendar function which is still being developed is a great idea that will allow service providers to post their availability and hence save them a great deal of planning and coordination. When will this feature become available?

Chosenlist.com -Video Classifieds Site

May 27, 2008 Author: KillerStartups.com - all | Filed under: KillerStartups

What it does

Chosenlist is a new site that facilitates the posting of free video classified ads and lower-cost employment ads in a safe online environment. Currently limited to Arizona, but expanding quickly, Chosenlist is basically a cleaner looking Craigslist complete with the ability to upload video ads. Like Craigslist, Chosenlist is a local classifieds solution, meaning that you first have to select your area to begin your searching. Next, either plug in a keyword or search by category and take advantage of being able to see video of the person you hire or the thing you buy before you commit. Perhaps the most interesting feature at Chosenlist is their Certified-Videographer Network in which people pay a small fee to be trained as a videographer. After training, they are able to go throughout their community and solicit sales, take video and make a commission.

In their own words

“ChosenList.com’s mission is to provide a safe online destination for individuals and companies to promote their products and professional services, share videos, look for a new job and socialize with community members that have similar interests.”

Why it might be a killer

The Certified Videographer Network is an interesting way to try and forcibly grow this webpage. If enough people are in need of a job, this site might take off by the sheer pushiness of these newly created salesmen.

Some questions

Does this site have a chance? It is Craigslist with video and without the quantity of ads. Does anyone really care about the video?
