Hands-off with Garmin’s nuvifone

We're not sure it was a real great idea on Garmin's part to put its new smartphone / GPS / iPhone wannabe in a darkly lit room, on a bright pole, with a shiny globe around it... but hey, it's not our company. Needless to say, it was pretty difficult to get a shot of this thing, and impossible to get it in our hands. Imagine if the Samsung Blackjack was all screen, and you can pretty much get an idea of what this little guy is like in person. Check the gallery below for our attempt at photos.

Garmin gets official with its nuvifone

We know, it's not like the nüvifone is a total surprise any longer, but just in case you tend to rest easier after digesting information straight from the source, here goes. Garmin's recently (and abruptly) announced handset obviously marks the firm's first solo foray into the cellphone arena, and according to Cliff Pemble, the firm's president and COO, it's the "breakthrough product that cellphone and GPS users around the world have been longing for." That being said, the unit will feature a 3.5-inch touchscreen with a trio of primary icons -- Call, Search and View Map -- along with an internet browser, HSDPA support and preloaded maps of North America and / or Eastern and Western Europe. Furthermore, it houses "millions" of POIs, doles out turn-by-turn, voice-prompted directions and becomes Garmin's first device to include Google's local search capability. As for pricing and availability? We're looking at a Q3 2008 release, but we'll have to wait things out before finding out a price and who exactly will be carrying it. Check out the gallery below for shots of the device and its UI, and head on past the break for lots more dirt.

digg_url = 'http://digg.com/gadgets/Garmin_announces_the_Nuviphone';
That's right folks -- Garmin has just announced its new iPhone-like smartphone, the nüvifone. The device features full browsing, PIM, phone and of course, GPS functions galore. It's an HSDPA, quad-band phone, also equipped with WiFi, Bluetooth and a somewhat familiar ultrathin design with full touchscreen support. The unit will use Garmin's proprietary OS which is based on the UI its GPS units utilize, and sports a 3.5-inch LCD display, not unlike certain PNDs you know and love. There's no word on price or release date, though the company swears we're going to be hearing about it soon. We're live from the event and will have more to follow, so stay tuned to Engadget.

Sony’s Cyber-shot DSC-W110 leaks as well

Jan 30, 2008 Author: Nilay Patel | Filed under: Engadget

We're not certain why Sony didn't include the Cyber-shot DSC-W110 with all the other pre-PMA camera updates it hit us with the other day, but here it is, in titillating shady scan form. The shooter boasts 7.2 "effective" megapixel resolution, 4x optical zoom, a 2.5-inch LCD, a Carl Zeiss lens, ISO3200 sensitivity, and face detection software that distinguishes between kids and adults. No word on price (probably lower than the W120's $200), but it'll hit in the May with the rest of its Cyber-shot bretheren.

The hits keep coming with leaked Sony headphones

Jan 30, 2008 Author: Nilay Patel | Filed under: Engadget

You'll be needing some appropriately shady headphones to plug into all that leaked Sony audio gear we just showed you, and we've got you covered with info on a whole host of new headphones that'll hit in April. The MDR-AS20J, MDR-AS40EX, and MDR-AS50G all loop buds around your ears, while the MDR-AS30G drapes you down with some big ol' cans. Also leaked are the MS-AS100W buds, which look like a cross between classic Walkman headphones and in-ear monitors, while the MDR-EX700 does it straight-up in-ear style with seven different silicon sleeves for proper fitting. No pricing yet, but it looks like a strong lineup -- but we'll wait to see how these all sound before giving up our Ultimate Ears. Check 'em all out in the gallery below.

It looks like Sony has more than just cameras and digital photo frames up its sleeve these days, as we've just gotten a slew of leaked shots of its upcoming HiFi lineup. A number of the new systems seemed to be geared toward networked audio and video, and HDTV setups, with models like the NAS-S55HDE sporting features like an 80GB hard drive, the ability to act as a "music server," and wireless networking capabilities -- you know, regular GIGA Juke stuff. Check out all the specs after the break, and hit the gallery for a spy-rific view of your high-fidelity future.

Oh sure, just about every sports fan from casual to hardcore already saw the Patriots edge the New York Football Giants earlier this season in the blistering cold, but considering that only Tom knows what's really up with that ankle of his and the fact that Eli has been looking an awful lot like Peyton these past few weeks, it's a whole new season come Sunday. Ecobutton aims to reduce PC power consumption, not as much as power button

Jan 30, 2008 Author: Donald Melanson | Filed under: Engadget

Filed under:

While it won't reduce your carbon footprint as much as something like, say, the HumanCar, the folks behind the Ecobutton seem to think their new device will do its small part nonetheless, even if it's actual necessity may be somewhat in question. Apparently, the device will let you switch your PC to "ecomode" at the press of a button, although exactly what that is and how it differs from your usual sleep or hibernation mode is a bit of a mystery. The button seemingly does something to your PC, however, as the FAQ warns that some older computers and certain HP PCs may have trouble reactivating due to BIOS issues. No word as to when they'll be available directly to consumer just yet, but those looking to turn 'em into a business opportunity can order some now from "recognized promotional gift distributors" for between $12 and $18 apiece depending on the quantity.

Sony’s new Alpha A300 and A350 get official

Jan 30, 2008 Author: Nilay Patel | Filed under: Engadget

We knew they were coming, and here they are -- say hello to Sony's Alpha A300 and A350. The 10.2 megapixel A300 and 14.2 megapixel A350 are just as we'd heard, with flip-out 2.7-inch swivel screens and live preview that retains the ability to autofocus. The CompactFlash DSLRs also go up to ISO3200, and feature burst modes of 3fps (A300) and 2.5fps (A350). Both cams will hit in April, the A300 with a 18-70mm kit lens for $800, and the A350 in a $900 kit or an $800 body-only package. There are also a couple new lenses, but no word of the mysterious A900 yet.

General Dynamics Itronix intros rugged Duo-Touch II tablet PC

Jan 30, 2008 Author: Donald Melanson | Filed under: Engadget

Filed under:

General Dynamics Itronix sure took their time producing a follow-up to its original Duo-Touch tablet PC, but it has finally come though, with its new Duo-Touch II offering a fairly sizable leap after that nearly three year dry spell. It's still far from a powerhouse, however, with it boasting a 1.2 GHz Core Duo U2500 processor and a max 2GB of RAM, although that's somewhat made up for by its extensive connectivity options, including 3G support and GPS in addition to the usual WiFi and Bluetooth. Most importantly, the die-case magnesium unit should also be more than rugged enough for all but the most demanding users, with it meeting or exceeding MIL-STD 810F durability standards and thoroughly sealed to keep water and dust out. Just be prepared to shell out for all that durability, with the tablet set to demand a full $3,595 when it becomes available in March.
