Apr 1, 2008 Author: thomasg | Filed under: KillerStartups

What it does

Social and business networks are all the rage these days and one that promises to connect the dispersed fashion industry certainly warrants a look. Lexposure allows anyone to register and upload their portfolios and other pertinent information. Members can communicate with one another on the easy to use forums, check individuals’ activity feeds to see what they are up to or post on other member’s walls. Basically, this is a site that allows everyone in the fashion industry to get to know one another, find work or pitch their latest creation. Like many other similar sites, users can also meet new people by sharing their network of friends with everyone else.

In their own words

“Lexposure.net is the first social and business platform custom-built for people in the fashion and creative scenes. We designed it to be the leading networking and information website for the fashion and creative scene. Whether you're a photographer, model, designer, hair or makeup artist, editor, booker or producer - anyone can have his own account on Lexposure.net.”

Why it might be a killer

This could become a required tool for anyone wishing to get ahead in the fashion industry. In an industry where networking is incredibly important, this will give people a way to make themselves known and perhaps get that all important introduction that can change their lives.

Some questions

Will fashion industry decision makers use this site or will it just become a site for up-and-coming hopefuls looking for a break? Either way, it appears original enough to be a successful venture.

Rsstickr.com - Put an RSS Feed on your Site

Apr 1, 2008 Author: thomasg | Filed under: KillerStartups

What it does

Rsstickr makes it simple to put up an RSS feed on your website without having to do any of the programming yourself. Simply go to Rsstickr, and choose the width, height, headline color, font color and whether or not you want to show the entire text or just the headline. Next, enter the URL of your website and the URL of the feed you’d like to add and Rsstickr will immediately provide you with the code that you need to paste on your site. No registration or special knowledge is required so if you’d like to spruce up your site with an RSS feed, go to Rsstickr and get the job done in minutes. If you would rather not clutter up your site with a feed on the main page, there is also an option to have the feed open up in a new window.

In their own words

“Rsstickr makes it easy to put an RSS feed on your website. Easy and quick to use, Rsstickr makes your site more dynamic.”

Why it might be a killer

Rsstickr is very easy to use and does not require any programming knowledge to implement. It is free and has lots of customizable options making this a potentially attractive widget for small to medium-sized site owners everywhere.

Some questions

There is very little information provided on the site and without actually trying out the service, it is difficult to see what there business model is. Will they be plugging advertisements into your site’s RSS ticker? If that is the case, they will have to do a better job of describing what kind of advertising it will be to ensure that they don’t lose people who worry about the type of advertising. If this isn’t an advertising-based model, then how will they be making money?

Greenhouse’s absurd 8x optical zoom kit for cameraphones

Apr 1, 2008 Author: Thomas Ricker | Filed under: Engadget

Guess what's going to happen when you bolt Greenhouse's 8x optical zoom onto your pathetic little cameraphone lens? Right, 8 times the slop. Nevertheless, we're curious to try the kit -- which includes the tripod and universal lens mount -- ourselves. Just not ¥8,800 (about $88) curious.

Sbrows.com - New Search Engine Interface

Apr 1, 2008 Author: thomasg | Filed under: KillerStartups

What it does

Sbrows offers a radically different look and feel to the search engine environment that we’ve all grown accustomed to. The engine itself is a familiar one, as Sbrows uses the Google search engine to bring you the most accurate results. The difference between Sbrows and all other search engines is in the different search experience caused by the interface and the ability to search by categories. When you search for a term, you receive the same results as you would in Google but you are shown a preloaded page of each site which allows you to check what the site is about before actually entering it. Scroll through page after page of results and see exactly what you’re getting before you click. The categories feature allows you to customize your search to specific sites like Facebook or Youtube.

In their own words

“Start your search and then navigate through sbroWsed results. Choose the right one and bingo!”

Why it might be a killer

Being able to see the search results without actually clicking on to the page will allow people to get a better idea of what they are clicking on before actually doing so. Many sites mislead you into clicking on them and with Sbrows this is a thing of the past.

Some questions

Currently, you have to scroll through search results one at a time. In order to make this a really useful service perhaps they could give you the results in a thumbnail fashion allowing you a sneak preview without having to wait for each page to load up while you search.

Apr 1, 2008 Author: thomasg | Filed under: KillerStartups

What it does

Rapidsearch is an easy to use search engine that allows you to search for Rapidshare and other file sharing site links. Just type your desired query into the search bar, click which sites you would like to search, and Rapidsearch does the rest, giving you hundreds of search results to choose from. The Rapidsearch engine scours sites, forums and message boards for Rapidshare file links which you can then simply download. Choose from a number of well-known file share sites including: rapidshare.com, 4filehosting.com, multiply.com, turboupload.com, megaupload.com and zshare.net. So, if what you are looking for is an easy way to search for shared files, take a look at Rapidsearch and start downloading.

In their own words

“Rapidsearch is a Rapidshare search engine search on sites, forums, message boards for Rapidshare file links.”

Why it might be a killer

The search engine is simple to use and gives accurate search results. With a good range of supported searchable sites, Rapidsearch could become the engine of choice for those requiring a rapidshare search engine.

Some questions

They are not the only players in this space and their success in marketing the site will be the ultimate determining factor in its eventual success or failure. Are they working on expanding the site a bit to include an “about” section so that people have a bit more of a background before using the service?

HPI’s G-Dog sniffs out your human wreckage

Apr 1, 2008 Author: Thomas Ricker | Filed under: Engadget

Filed under:

HPI Japan just conjured up GR-001's new best friend: the G-Dog. The DIY, four-legged robot with a taste for jugulars and what appears to be a sword for a tail stands just 5.3-inches tall and features the same control unit and sensors of his bipedal buddy. Presumably, G-Dog will only respond to street-wize greetings of "Whut up Gee?" and "'Sup Dawg?" at which point he'll lubricate his turf (aka, your carpet). G-Dog is expected to terrorize Japan sometime in July for around $1,000. Backside front, after the break.

PirateBay Now Operating From Sinai Desert

Apr 1, 2008 Author: Stan Schroeder | Filed under: Mashable!

piratebay in sinai

Man, they just keep on coming. Apparently, the Swedish copyright law has been abruptly changed, which prompted those gnarly pirates from the PirateBay to move their operation to desert of Sinai in Egypt.

Here’s a bit of nitty gritty tech info for all you technical types:

In Sinai we’ve set up the systems with three redundant fibre links. Besides local connectivity in Egypt we also have connectivity to Saudi-Arabia and Israel. Jordan is quite close and we hope to install a link there as well as soon as our budget will reach that level. This way we’re actually hosted in Asia as well as Africa.

Sorry to see you guys leave Europe; hope you brought those extra blankies, nights can be mighty cold in the desert.

Colorware gets ahold of Guitar Hero axes — we’re in love

Apr 1, 2008 Author: Darren Murph | Filed under: Engadget

Filed under:

If you thought a Colorware'd DS Lite was the new heat, get a load of this. The company famous for making gadgetry of all kinds look its best has turned its talents on the iconic Guitar Hero axe, and we must say, we're infatuated. Wii, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 thrashers are all invited, and while users can join the revolution for as little as $198 (that includes the title and a painted instrument), current slingers can send their guitar in and get it colorized for as little as $99. For those on a budget, we strongly recommend not clicking the links below. Those completely unafraid of purging their wallet on impulse buys can go ahead.

[Thanks, Adam]
